A Wedding: Mickey and Minnie

3.31.2010

I had an impromptu wedding shoot yesterday. The couple was very happy.

I did it for free.

The economy and all.

You know.

Sometimes it is fun having a two-year-old with romantic notions. I think she takes after me.

Room to Dream

10.30.2009

Some people have expressed some concern about my website and the photos I have chosen to display in my gallery, the nicest kind of concern that asks "why don't you post even more of what you do?"

The short answer?

Professionally, I want to be a wedding photojournalist.

Guys, you have no idea how passionate I am about this, and how absolutely stoked I am to have the beginnings of a plan in place!

I'm beginning to gear up on the slow track to joining the Wedding Photojournalist Association (WPJA) and establish myself as a documentary wedding photographer. I say "slow track" because I feel almost as though I am starting over entirely. I have tried a lot of things with my camera over the last several years, mostly dedicating it to the services of my dear friends and a few paying clients, but as it stands, I am still a beginner in many ways.

Now it is as if I have been given permission to be a beginner again, to be a beginner still, to take on jobs as I feel I am ready for them. I've shot over two dozen weddings now, many of them for clients who did not understand the difference between documentary wedding photography and wedding portrait photography. Many just needed a cheap wedding photographer, and I was determined to give away something to them that I couldn't afford for my own wedding.

With most of my friends married now (hey friends!), I'm feeling freer to raise my prices and set some new guidelines - for my family's sake, for my clients' sake, for my own sanity.

*I will more thoroughly educate clients on how I view my role as their photographer before the contract is signed.
*I will outsource my post-processing for faster delivery that is not dependent on my health or the state of my family affairs.
*I will limit the images displayed on my website to those kinds of unique images I want to produce (this blog will be the exception - it's my whatever I want to post spot!).
*I will only take photography projects I can and want to take based on location and ability.

The more I have thought about this, talked about this, dreamed about this, the more I have realized that my photography dream is not just in the details or in the "just shoot something because you have to shoot something" - it's in the story, the world that takes me beyond simple candid shots and stiff portraiture to bring me absolutely alive. It's in the moments people don't think to capture, the smiles that they forgot to pose because someone drew it out of them, the unselfconscious beauty that disappears too often when the camera appears.

I'm hoping to change over to a flash site sometime next year, thinking of getting a new camera - a CANON, just for fun, in spite of my practical Nikon approach - and a new lens or two, doing some SERIOUS Sauer family photography that hasn't gotten done since Pete and I got married! I'm also planning to track down some models to build my portfolio here in Charleston, and I will eventually be adding both engagement and portrait galleries to my website (for you wonderful, concerned people out there), as soon as I find time to dig out the images that live within my documentary style.

I can't wait to be able to post life-photos here at my blog, to step outside of my fears and live what I love again without reservation. I want to be a Matt McGraw, a Tracy Turpen, a Kelly Lorenz, a Carlo Carletti (though, okay, he gets Italy - I probably won't ever have that!!!) - really, I just want to be me, taking those kinds of pictures.

In the meantime, I've got one wedding still in post-processing, and a website design to finish for a friend, and then it's on to baby prep. I can't believe he's going to be here so soon - the time has really flown with this pregnancy. I can't believe I'm really not having to put the photography away to have him - it's almost too much goodness to take in...

-----------------

A couple notes on my new website:

1) I have updated the entry page on the site to allow for a large site and a small site for different size screens. I am still working on photo resolution for faster loading, etc.

2) I have changed the NavBar around for easier navigation between blog and website and throughout the different size websites. Hopefully, this will help anyone who was getting disoriented yesterday.

3) I am still needing to work in the code to fix the font sizing on my About and Contact pages; this may be an after-baby project - so sorry for any inconvenience.

Still Processing - Favorites from Sunday and Monday

9.29.2009

Out of the Rain: a favorite black-and-white from Sunday's take.

Bride-Watching: My little scamp of a photography assistant - found this gem yesterday.

Processing - Favorite from Today

9.26.2009

Processed 114 out of 998 editable shots on my January wedding today. Pleased with progress, losing ability to keep eyes open now. This one made my list of favorites. Thought I'd share. Because that seemed like the thing to do through this cloud of tired. Yes, that.

I ♥ Faces Contest - Bubbles

8.17.2009

This week's I ♥ Faces contest is about bubbles. I haven't entered in a while, but I had to enter this terrific shot - I just can't help laughing at this old guy blowing bubbles right at me! He was so sweet!

Enter one of your own today or tomorrow at the I ♥ Faces site!

Aaron & Amy - July 18, 2009

8.13.2009

It was Amy's fairytale wedding, marrying her Prince in a silken gown with all the people she loved surrounding her. We so enjoyed this one last wedding shoot (sans toddler) before digging in and getting serious about preparations for our December baby.

Wishing this couple a sweet happy-ever-after...

another old favorite

4.28.2009

This won't be the best zoom image I'll ever grab, but it's got a special place in my memory, as it was the first I ever attempted, and the way it came out made me want to dance! It still does, really. She was the most blushing bride I've ever captured on camera, and he, the dashing hero who swept into her life and told her what it would be like from the moment they met. The wonder of it all is all over her face here...

moment of departure

4.27.2009

This shot is one of my absolute favorite wedding shots ever. Sometimes, I feel like I try and try and try to be a photojournalistic photographer, and sometimes, I get the bride and groom who ignores me just enough that I can be in the right place at exactly the right moment. This is a moment I will never forget.

Wedding - Gabe & Katie

4.24.2009

Along the lines of my vow to start showing off more of my photojournalistic work, I thought I would post some of my favorites from Gabe and Katie's pre-release. This was such a fun wedding. I am not so intimately, emotionally involved in every wedding shoot I do, but this one was fantastic, two of our best friends joining their lives together. We had a blast of a weekend.

I haven't seen all the photos yet, but this last one may just end up being my absolute favorite from the whole shoot. I just love the story it tells. The thing that I love about photojournalism is that it surprises even the photographer. I use a wide-angle shot to get all of the story that I can when it is happening, but so many times, I don't find the story until processing, and then even I am blown away. I love it because it is a constant chance at discovery about love, about life.

My processing time is a bit longer than a typical shoot-what-is-at-your-wedding photographer, but I'm writing the story with the pictures, and I love it, almost every time!

A Wedding Favorite

4.20.2009

I officially finished processing Peter and Sarah's wedding last night. This is probably my favorite shot from the entire shoot. I have three weddings left to finish before my next one in July, but I have a plan. Granted, my plans really don't count for much when you figure in my variables...

98/365 - tender reflection

4.13.2009

Saturday, 4/11/09 - I didn't officially shoot a 365 on Saturday, so I pulled an instant fave from my 50+ G to share from the wedding I shot. I can't get over the romance of this little detail shot - get a load of that kiss!

a rarity...

4.02.2009

I hate general crowd shots/table shots at weddings. People are usually eating, or freaking out about the camera coming their way, and getting all self-conscious. While I was working this evening, however I ran across one that actually gave a wonderful sense of what was going on - I think they all missed the camera! Thought I'd share the fun!

Peter & Sarah - October 4, 2008

3.16.2009

These have been a long time in coming, and this wedding is still in post-processing (almost done!), but it's time to get up some of my favorites for this bride and groom! What can I say? Shooting last Saturday has me in a wedding mood!

Friends of the couple - if you know them, grab 'em for a link to their private album. They have the password!

More to come soon!

71/365 - The Day After

3.15.2009

Everyone always comments on how they've never seen another photographer do what I do to get the pictures I get. I am up, down, all over the place at weddings, practically climbing the walls if I have to so I can see everything. It makes for some very creative shots. It also combines with my Lyme disease and need for rest to make a two to three day recovery from every wedding I shoot.

Every once in a while I think to ask myself if it's really worth it.

Oh yeah.

Fifty-Six - On Her Wedding Day...

2.28.2009

Shot this morning for the Shutter Sisters One Word Project. They already picked a winner, but here it is anyway! Check out the rest of my "Promise" photos here.

I ♥ Faces Contest - Kids

2.24.2009

The category this week at I ♥ Faces is Black & White. This is my kids entry this week, a frozen moment with this lovely little girl who was up quite past her bedtime. Every time I see this shot, I find myself drawn into her little-girl world, oblivious to all the activity around, caught up in her innocence, remembering my own little-girl thoughts.

Be sure to stop by and check out the other kids entries at I ♥ Faces. Or stop in and enter a photo of your own!

[This photo didn't place in the contest, but you have got to see the winning photo! Check it out here!]

I ♥ Faces Contest - Adult

The category this week at I ♥ Faces is Black & White. This is my adult entry, a favorite b/w conversion from a friend's wedding this spring. I love the sweet tender tension between this couple who hadn't kissed each other before their wedding ceremony, the soft, new amazement written all over their faces. One of my all-time favorites!

But don't just stop here! Be sure to stop by and check out the other adult entries at I ♥ Faces. Or stop in and enter a photo of your own!

[UPDATE: This photo placed tenth in this week's contest. Check out the winners here!]

Tagged in Four

2.18.2009

I got tagged today by e.o.w. over at Mindwhisperings, and while I don't usually respond to tagging, she was kind enough to leave a comment about it here, so I thought I'd oblige.

The game is about fours - and a little bit of life. The rules:

1. Go to the 4th folder where you keep your pictures on your computer.
2. Post the 4th picture in the folder.
3. Explain the photo.
4. Tag 4 fellow bloggers to join in the fun!

This is my photo (considering HOW MANY folders I have for pictures on my computer, it was quite the trick picking the most honest one!). The dried rose here is one of my Stonemeadow roses, laid out on my wedding dress on a day when I was down after having Piper. I was playing around and trying to capture the feeling of nostalgia that comes after a wedding, when time has passed and the stressful moments have faded to soft, happy memories, fuzzy around the edges. The dress has a more interesting story - it was the second of four wedding dresses I have owned.

I bought my first dress in January of 2005, before Pete and I were officially engaged. I was under so much stress, and my weight loss told on me - I shrank OUT of the dress. I will always wish I had kept it - I've tried to find it again, but haven't had any luck.

This dress, the one I wore for our wedding, is the one that I will give to Piper someday, to play around in, or to wear herself.

My third wedding dress was for our beach wedding - a fun six-month anniversary photo op in which we played around on the beach with a few close friends and just generally had fun - no stress involved. We forgot the music and the rings and the formality, but we had so much fun! (Photos here from Rob Garland Photographers)

My fourth dress... well, that was just because I'm a girl who can't resist wedding dresses. And it's a favorite. I may do a white dress self-portrait with it one of these days...

So that's my long, rambling story about this photo.

Now, the tagging. I think I will tag Danielle (because I know you have pictures!), Emily (because you've sent so many people over to my blog - this should help with some inspiration!), Laura (because she was so incredibly nice to me today!), and Leeann (because I need to tag her to get photos on her blog anymore!). Have fun, girls!

I ♥ Faces Contest - Adult

2.17.2009

The category this week at I ♥ Faces is Wonder. I had watched these sisters all day as they played around, getting ready for the wedding moment that would separate them by relationship, by time, by hundreds of miles, but it wasn't until this moment, when the younger sister moved to lift her sister's veil, that what was happening became real. The absolute wonder on her face as she looked into her older sister's eyes and saw her as a bride for the first time still makes me cry to see, two years later.

Be sure to stop by and check out the other adult entries. They're pretty great!

[UPDATE: This photo placed 7th in the top ten! Check out the other finalists here!]
